Verl was born on August 27,1934 in Enid, Oklahoma to Iniece King and J.V. Green. Verl was the only son in a family of 5 children, 4 of whom were girls. All the children were raised by Henry W. King and their mother Iniece King
As a child Verl attended Booker T. Washington Carver School and then graduated from Enid High School in 1952 and was ready to start the next chapter of his life.
After graduation, Verl decided that the next chapter would be spent in Portland, Oregon, where he connected with his Uncle Robert King and wife Aunt Josephine, as well as his cousin Ed Burks and wife Maude.
In 1955 Verl became an active member of Vancouver Avenue First Baptist Church where his relatives were also active members. It was the same church where he met his future wife while attending the Young Adult Sunday School classes. On July 20th, 1956, Verl and Izora Lathan were married and eventually had 4 children. Verl Jr., Veronica, Vincson and Vyron.
Verl was an active member of the Male Chorus with his deep silky smooth baritone voice. In January of 1960, Verl was ordained as a Deacon at VAFBC by Rev. O.B. Williams, he remained on the board until he was designated Deacon-Emeritus under the leadership of Pastor J.W. Matt Hennessee.
In 1956 Verl also attended the Master Speaking & Sales training Institute until he successfully completed the Master Basic Speaking Training Course and graduated.
Verl worked for Mears Control Company for about 10 years before he was hired as one of the original Black Longshore Clerks in Portland, Oregon on July 11, 1973. Verl worked on the waterfront as a Basic Marine Clerk Supervisor and Chief Supervisor at Terminal 6 Auto Dock for Local 40 and the Port of Portland for many years until he retired October 1, 1996.
On July 20, 2025, Verl and Izora celebrated their 69th wedding Anniversary with family and friends.
On September 28th Verl was called to his eternal home and left behind to cherish his memory his wife Izora, children Verl Jr./Sandra, Veronica, Vincson/Linda and Vyron. Grandchildren: Jordan/Johanna, Alisha, Kianna, Keitan, Vincson II/Ciara, Tevin/Maya, Jamar, Vyron Jr, Vyshawn, VeRon, and Vykisha and 29 great grandchildren and 2 sisters, Danquin K. McCord and Karmon J. Austin. Gone but not forgotten Mother Iniece King, Henry King, J.V. Green, Ed Burks, Maude Burks, sisters Fancheon McCaskill, Connie Bracy and all the friends that were as close to Verl as brothers and sisters.
