Sam Howell Obituary

With love and reflection, we say goodbye to Sam Mack Howell, who passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 24, 2025, in Portland, Oregon.

Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Sam entered the world on February 17, 1930, the son of Robert L. Howell and Lucy Berry. He was named after his uncle Sam Mack George William Howell. From an early age, music was woven into Sam’s spirit. During his teenage years, he and his brothers—Robert and Ruben—shared their gift of harmony through local singing events, becoming known for their rich, distinctive vocals throughout the Memphis community.

Sam proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, completing two tours with honorable discharge, the final one in 1952. Following his service, he returned to Memphis, where he worked part-time as a barber while serving full-time at the local Veteran Hospital. In 1960, he relocated to Portland, Oregon, continuing his commitment to veterans at the Portland VA Hospital.

Sam joined ESCO Foundry in 1966, beginning as a grinder and advancing into welding and other shop positions. His dedication and work ethic carried him through decades of service until his retirement in the early 2000s.

Known for his magnetic personality, Sam never met a stranger. With a quick wit and a deep love of laughter, he had a knack for sharing “so-bad-they’re-good” jokes—not for the punchline, but for the joy they sparked in others. His laughter was his signature, a true reflection of the warmth he carried.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Lucy; his siblings Mary Elizabeth, Willie Davis, Ruben, and Robert Jr.; and two of his children, Yvonne D. and Gregory B.

He is lovingly remembered by his children Adrienne L., Karen V., Rachelle R. (Mario) Denton, Aaron Washington, and Troy Ramsey. His legacy continues through grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, dear friends, caregivers, and associates who were touched by his kindness, humor, and generous heart.

The Howell family deeply appreciates all the love shown to Sam throughout his lifetime. May his memory continue to bring smiles, just as he always did.
