Mitchelene Davenport Bush, a beloved mother, grandmother, and sister, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2025, in Portland, Oregon.
Mitchelene was born on March 1, 1952, in Scottsburg, Virginia, to Royal and Mary Davenport. She was the oldest of five siblings. Mitchelene attended Spanish Grove Church and accepted Christ at nine years old. In 1967, she and her family moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she graduated as valedictorian of Simon Gratz High School in 1970. A gifted student, Mitchelene went on to attend Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. She often shared fond memories of her college years and was a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Mitchelene later earned her Master of Science degree in Counseling from Michigan State University and began her career in social work. She was married to Stanley Bush, and though their paths later diverged, they shared the blessing of two daughters, Kalia and Khadija. A devoted and loving mother, Mitchelene worked tirelessly to care for “her girls.” She spent the majority of her professional life as an educator in Detroit Public Schools, where she taught for more than 20 years. Dedicated to her faith, she was a member of Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, serving faithfully in the choir and as a Sunday school teacher. She later joined Amplify Christian Church under the leadership of Pastor Corey Kennard where she was an active member for many years.
Mitchelene’s life was rich with faith, family, and, in her later years, travel. She was an avid reader and enjoyed walking—whether it was a peaceful stroll through her neighborhood or an exploration in a new city. Traveling brought her great joy, and she especially cherished the memories of her 2019 trip to Dubai with her sister Charlene and a 2023 journey to France and Italy with her daughters.
In 2017, Mitchelene relocated to Portland, Oregon, to help care for her grandchildren. She embraced life on the West Coast and enjoyed being close to her daughters, son-in-law, and grandchildren. While in Portland, she joined Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, where she was a life group member, bible class student, and member of the usher board.
Mitchelene was preceded in death by her parents, Royal and Mary Davenport. She is survived by her daughters, Kalia Walker (James) and Khadija Bush; her siblings, Malinda Goodjoines (Charles), Sharon Davenport, Charlene Good, and Royal Davenport; and her beloved grandchildren, Charlotte and Aaron. She also leaves behind loving nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Mitchelene will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know her, love her, and be loved by her.
