Mertria L. Barber was born in Portland, Oregon the seventh child of both Mertria Martin and John Willie (JW) Martin on July 10th 1951.
She attended Boise elementary, Oakley green middle school, and Jefferson high school.
In 1968 at the age of seventeen, Mertria said “I Do” to James L.Barber where they began raising three beautiful children. Jzamal, Daryl, and Tisha Barber.
Mertria was raised in the church. First a member of Emanual Temple, where she sang in the choir. And later joined Power House where she also was a choir member. As you can see, “Mertria loved to sing and had a beautiful voice”.
Mertria was not only a child of God, she was a sister, aunt, friend, grand and grand grandmother. Mertria was just an all-around blessing to meet and plain be around. She strived to make sure God and Love was taught and felt from her wisdom, love and smile.
Mertria was loved for her cooking as she enjoyed feeding others. As her granddaughter Latina mentions her fresh from scratch biscuits and serving them hot and ready will be dearly missed.
Mertria lived her life well and with honor. She gained her wings August 24th 2021, while holding her youngest grandsons Elijah’s hand. She was surrounded by friends, family, and loved ones. Her life was not in vein but rather joyful, fulfilled, and celebrated. Although our hearts weren't ready for Mertria’s homegoing. God had a different plan for her. And with that said, he sent her, her wings.
Mertria leaves to grieve a lot of friends, family, and loved ones. But one thing she wants all of us to remember is to live life and get right with the Lord and we will one day see her again. She’s waiting on us.
