Martha Sue Purifoy, affectionately known as Mot and lovingly referred to by some as “Ma Sue”, was born on June 11, 1955, in Portland, Oregon. As a feisty middle child of eight, she was the
beloved daughter of the Rev. Z. James and Sallie Mae Purifoy. With her vibrant red hair, infectious laughter, and quick wit, Martha had a unique ability to light up any room.
Martha’s educational journey began at Highland School, currently recognized as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School, and Whitaker School. She later graduated from Monroe High School. As a student Martha participated in many school activities including Girls Scouts, track and field, and was a member of the cheerleading squad. She was also know for her mathematical skills.
Martha had two beautiful sons, Glenn Lamont Harper Jr. (Scooter) and Armond Ramoan Harper Sr. (Turk). Her love for her boys was boundless, and their connection drew many of their friends to adopt her as their second mother. Martha’s passion for fashion led her to become a talented seamstress, designing her own unique attire
and teaching her nieces the art of sewing. Her professional journey included various retail
positions, including modeling for Meier & Frank and working as a bank teller. Martha’s ability to connect with people ultimately lead her to work at Portland Public Schools, where she served as an administrative assistant. Martha was a steadfast advocate for African American students while working for the school district. One of her proudest moments was helping to produce the Black Student Union Club Talent Show at Binnsmead Middle School. She was an enthusiastic supporter of “Take Your Child to Work Day”, often bringing along her granddaughter, nieces, and
neighborhood youth.
After retiring from Portland Public Schools, Martha cherished her time traveling and creating memories with family and friends, indulging in shopping, and especially moments with her beloved grandchildren, Saleena Harper and Armond Harper Jr. She found joy and camaraderie in the Red Hat Society, with her “Bodaciously Rouge” sisters providing her with comfort and joy following the loss of her sons.
In the summer of 2024, Martha joyfully recommitted her life to Jesus Christ, finding solace in her faith. She fought for her health and healing for over six years, ultimately returning home to be with the Lord on March 13, 2025. Known for her spirited mantra, “Ride it until the wheels fall off”.
Martha truly embodied resilience and love.
