Lee Edward Scurlock was born on January 8, 1937 in Tillatoba, Mississippi to Benjamin and Marcell Scurlock. Of thirteen siblings, he was the third child: six brothers and seven sisters. He graduated from Walker High School in Oakland, Mississippi.
Lee joined the Armed Forces September 16, 1959, and was honorably discharged January 13, 1965. Lee moved to Portland, Oregon and married the love of his life Ruth Walker on July 17, 1966.
Lee worked for Victory Plating Company and Pennwalt the name was later changed to ELF Atochem North America. He retired as a supervisor. In 1964, he joined Bethel AME Church. He became very active in the Church as well in the local community. For example, he was a trustee for over 45 years, member of the usher board, in charge of the youth usher board and an active Sunday School participant. You could find him working/repairing the roof of the church as well as showing many people how to light the stove. He was a member of the Mason’s “Prince Hall Enterprise Lodge No. 1.” He was also active in the Economic Development Committee (food pantry). He mentored children in the Leisure Hour Jr Golf Program for 30 years, participated and a member of the Leisure Hour Golf Club. He loved to play golf, bowl, play tennis, and have fish fries.
He is preceded in death by his son, Lee Edward Scurlock II, father Benjamin Scurlock, mother Marcell Scurlock, sister(s) Ruthel Scurlock and Annie Granville, and brother Larry Scurlock, sister-in-law(s) Jamesetta Brock and Clara Mae Peoples.
Lee is survived by his wife Ruth, two daughters Gail Phipps, Chicago, IL, Debra Ingram-Payne (Dennis), Vancouver, WA. Five grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He is also survived by siblings, Ben Willie Scurlock, Dorthy Rhymes, Elmon Scurlock (Rose), Russell Scurlock (Robin), Estella Griffins (Frank), Earl Scurlock (Deloris), Margaret Marshall (Paul), Mildred Scurlock, and Wilma Yates, sister-in-law Laura Jacobs
