Joe McFerrin, Sr. (Jody), a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, was born in 1943 in Morrilton, Arkansas, to Murlean and Earl McFerrin. In 1945, the family moved to Portland, Oregon where Murlean married Oscar Johnson, who helped raise Joe from a young age.
Joe attended Boise School and Jefferson High School, where he was a highly decorated three sport athlete. He was an all-state football player, state champion and selected to play in the Shriners All-Star Football Game. He continued his education with college coursework.
He married the love of his life, Sandra McFerrin, with whom he shared many wonderful years until her passing in January 2022. Together, they built a strong and loving family and raised two children, Dior and Joe McFerrin II, whom he cherished deeply.
In 1966, Joe was drafted into the United States Army, where he served on the front lines of the Vietnam War. He served his country with courage and pride and was deeply grateful to have returned home safely from the treacherous conflict.
A man of many talents and an unwavering work ethic, Joe worked as a butcher for the well-known Portland meat-packing company Swift and Company before owning and operating his own janitorial business. He also dedicated over 30 years to the Boys & Girls Club, where he coached, mentored, and inspired countless young people.
Joe had a lifelong passion for coaching youth sports—including basketball, football, and baseball. He believed deeply in the power of teamwork, discipline, and giving back to the next generation. In his free time, Joe loved to fish (and eat his catch!), ride his bike, and take long walks. He was also known for his practical wisdom, especially his knack for saving money and managing resources wisely.
Joe is survived by his children Dior and Joe II; daughter in law Lisa; his siblings Shirley, Tondalayera, and Michael Sr.; his grandchildren Alexandria, Ra’Onna, Joe III, and Nia; his great grandchildren Lauryn, Reyna, Cameron, Maliyah, Kayden, and Brayden; and a host of extended family and friends who will miss him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sandra; his parents, Murlean, Earl McFerrin and Oscar Johnson; and his siblings Bennie Allen, Debbie Johnson, and Rickie Johnson.
Joe will be remembered for his generous spirit, sense of humor, and the positive impact he had on everyone who knew him. His life was a testament to hard work, love, and community service. Joe McFerrin, Sr. will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
