Jeffrey Sloan, I Obituary

Jeffrey L. Sloan I was born on Tuesday, March 24th, 1953 in Portland, OR to the late Charles I. Sloan Sr. and Vergie Sloan, the third of five children. He attended Highland Elementary School through the eighth grade. He furthered his education at Benson Polytechnic and Jefferson High Schools, graduating with his high school diploma from Jefferson High School in June, 1971.

Jeffrey married the love of his life, the former Marilyn Jones on February 13, 1972, in the living room of his mother’s home. Their marriage lasted more than 30 years; and to that marriage was added three children. Jeffrey L. Sloan II, Anika Marie Sloan and Lakisha Evette Sloan, who preceded him in death. In 1999, his youngest daughter Cecily Huchin was born.

Jeffrey loved music and formed several singing groups. He had a lovely tenor voice and dance moves to go with that voice. He also enjoyed singing in choirs including the annual Lift Every Voice Choir of his own church, Sharon Seventh-day Adventist Church.

With his well rounded abilities and determination to do whatever he put his mind to do, Jeffrey worked for Otis Elevator, Crown Zellerbach, and Fred Meyers, before giving into his love for working as a mechanic. He enjoyed working on the cars of his family and friends. No matter what time of day or night you called Jeffrey, he would go and see what was wrong with your vehicle and make the repairs. In the rare cases when he was not able to fix your vehicle he would give you specific information to tell the next mechanic and follow up with you to make sure you communicated the information he gave you.

Jeffrey was always optimistic about life and enjoyed helping and caring for others. Living his life in North and Northeast Portland, Jeffrey found his own way to become a “helpful neighbor” in the neighborhood he grew up in. Jeffrey brought joy to everyone’s life and is known to keep everyone laughing with his comedic storytelling. Everyone loved Jeffrey and could for sure depend on him in time of need. Jeffrey knew no strangers. He could go into a corner store or be in the line at the DMV and talk with someone as if they were a long lost friend.

Jeffrey’s infectious smile, his warm and charming personality and his loyalty to his family and friends, will be greatly missed.

On Friday, July 10, 2020, Jeffrey peacefully departed this life. He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles I. Sloan, Sr. and Vergie L. Sloan; sister, Helen Elizabeth Ann Sloan; brother, Charles I. Sloan, Jr.; daughter, Lakisha Evette Sloan; nephew, Markel D. Sayles.

Left to honor Jeffrey, cherish his memory and remember his life are his wife, Marilyn Sloan; Son, Jeffrey L. Sloan II; daughters, Anika M. Sloan and Cecily Huchin; sister Chantay M. Reid (Elwood); seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He will also be greatly missed by a host of nieces and nephews, family and friends .
