James “Dokey” Stevenson Hurst was the youngest of six children, born to Ottoway and Lula M. Hurst on December 11, 1952, in Osyka, Mississippi. His family moved to Portland, Oregon in 1963. James attended Holliday School and graduated from Grant High School in 1970.
James was an outgoing person full of fun and laughter. He loved to hang out with friends and family.
He worked several jobs in the Portland area, he was handy at doing things and a jack of many trades. He was known by many as “the tall guy that rode a bicycle all over Portland”.
James is preceded in death by his parents, Ottoway and Lula M. Hurst; four brothers, Leslie E. Hurst, Darnell Hurst, Milton Taylor, and Freddie B. Hurst.
He leaves to mourn two daughters, Charlotta Hurst and Lovely Murphy; five grandchildren; his only sister, Domenago “Sally” Hurst; one brother, Julius Hurst; two sisters-in-law, Ida M. Kelly and Linda Hurst; his uncle, James Winfield of Amite, Louisiana; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
James departed this life on October 2, 2021. He will be missed.
