Ivory Joe Carter was a man of warmth, laughter, and boundless creativity. Born in Fresno, California, to Etta and Ernest Carter on May 24, 1967, he grew up in a large and loving family, a brother to Ernest Carter, Dupree Carter, Oderick Smith, Quai Baker, and his late sister, Belinda Waller. Ivory was a cherished father to his children, Ivory and Cheyenne Carter, and a proud grandfather to Felicity, Dacien, Cameron, Roman, and Royce. With over 34 nieces and nephews, his presence was deeply woven into the lives of so many who loved him.
From the beginning, Ivory had a spirit all his own. Our mother used to say he was her “skinny baby,” and no amount of collard greens or beans could change that. Despite his slim frame, he stood tall in stature, and his humor and heart were even larger. Ivory had a natural gift for bringing joy to those around him—he could find laughter in any situation, offering smiles and lightheartedness wherever he went.
A true artist at heart, Ivory could transform any surface into a canvas, often favoring pen like his brother Dupree. His creativity extended beyond visual art into music, a passion that stayed with him throughout his life. Dubbed "Soulja Boy" as a child, he immersed himself in music, spending hours at the dining room table writing lyrics, playing beats on repeat, and fine-tuning his craft—much to the occasional frustration of his mother, who often had to remind him to turn the volume down.
More than anything, Ivory was a man of heart. A deep thinker, a good listener, and a healer through his humor, he had a way of making others feel understood and at ease. He often pondered scripture and the mysteries of life, offering wisdom and perspective to those who sought it. Generous to those closest to him, he loved fiercely and was devoted to his children and family.
Ivory Joe Carter leaves behind a lifetime of memories, a legacy of love, and a family forever changed by his presence. Though we mourn his passing, we take comfort in knowing his spirit lives on through every story, every laugh, and every moment shared in his honor.
He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
