Hazel Massey, affectionately known as “Poonin” by her grand/great-grandchildren, was born on April 17, 1931 in Commerce, Texas to Curley Massey Sr. and Maxcine Stiggers. She was the eldest of seven children. Hazel was called home to be with the Lord on October 11, 2021.
In 1946, Hazel married Raymond Sibley and to their union Lena ("Joan") and Carolyn were born. In 1952 she moved to Portland, Oregon to be with her family who had relocated to the area. In 1962 she gave birth to her youngest daughter, Marleta Scott.
Once she moved to Portland, she worked for many years in the hospitality field. She then worked for Techtronix, Pacific NW Bell, Portland Public Schools, and then retired from Kaiser Permanente after 20 years of service as a Surgical Sterilization Technician.
In 1960, Alma Barney, Hazel's closest friend, invited her to attend a church service at Vancouver Avenue First Baptist Church and at that time she dedicated her life to Christ and became a devout and faithful member where she served on the usher board for many years.
Hazel was best known for her exceptional sense of style, her sense of humor, and her unconditional love for her children and grandchildren. Hazel was also a no non-sense type of person who could either rule with an iron fist or love you with a heart of gold.
