George Akres was born on June 16th, 1935 in Eudora, Arkansas, to Roosevelt & Leatha Akres. George was the father of six children and proud Papa of 14 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. George joined the Army in 1953 and when honorably discharged settled in Portland, Oregon, where he married the love of his life Norma Akres. He worked for 20 plus years at Vern’s Auto Sales in Portland and was considered one of the best auto mechanics around. He also worked 8 years for Con Metco.
George and Norma spent the next 50 years doing everything together. This included many cruises to the Caribbean , bowling, camping and fishing. He also enjoyed playing cards and dominoes according to his OWN rules, which he would interpret in his OWN way and HIS WAY ALONE!
George was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Inez Triplett; brothers, Sam and John Akres; and granddaughter Shanna Hopkins Freeman.
George is survived by his wife, Norma Akres; sister, Mary Harris (Chicago, IL); daughters, Marcella Keeton (Earl), Zenna O’Mally (Las Vegas, NV); and sons, Vance Akres (Debra) (Federal Way, WA), Darrell Akres (Kim) (Tacoma, WA), Anthony Austin (Eugene, OR), John Cook Jr.; and many relatives and friends.
