When Fred returned home, he went to a trade school at Jackson State College where he learned masonry and concrete work. He later moved to Chicago where he worked in construction and later Fred worked at the University of Chicago, as a custodian.

In late 1965 Fred was introduced to a young lady by his cousin, her name was Christell Clark. They were later married and from this marriage they had three children Christopher, Frerita, and Tanisha.

In 1969 they relocated to Portland, Oregon where Fred worked for Esco Corp three years and was a welder and then he was hired at Freightliner Trucking Company from where he retired in 1992.
