“Auntie Esther”
Esther Marie Hurnton was born on November 4, 1958, in Portland, Oregon to Doris Hurnton and Robert Henry, Sr.. Esther was the middle child of Doris’ three daughters.
Although Esther had a bigger than life personality, she was known as a homebody where she enjoyed watching old sitcoms and cooking juicy hamburgers and French fries. At an early age Esther took an interest in sewing and she was an expert homemaker often cleaning the homes of her family and friends for hours, never missing a beat. If ever there was a project that needed attention, you could count on her to show up ready to pitch in without a complaint. Esther never had children of her own, but she loved children and all kids loved and adored her. She would often go from one friends home to another caring for their kids and showering them with love and affection. Esther made each child feel special and never missed an opportunity to shower them with compliments and praise. Because of her unconditional love, every child affectionately called her “Auntie Esther!”
Esther was small in stature but was known for her BIG, loud, and friendly voice. Whenever she would enter a room, you would hear her before you would see her and when she saw you, she’d LOUDLY welcome you with warmth and kindness. Esther would open her home and her heart to anyone in need, even if it meant shortcutting herself. Esther was a jokester and always had something funny to say or a funny story to tell.
There was no secret that Esther loved to party and have a good time. She loved celebrating holidays and enjoyed being in the kitchen with her mother and sisters cooking huge holiday meals.
Esther was high energy and loved life and although she didn’t drive, she would walk from one end of town to the other to visit and care for friends and family. If Esther knew you, you were family.
Esther attended John Adams High School and later joined the workforce as a production worker, retail worker, housekeeper, and care provider.
