Douglas Hughes Jr. was born in Oakland, California, on June 26, 1953. He was the oldest child of Douglas Hughes from Dublin, Georgia, and Josephine Searcie Hughes, from Portland, Oregon. He grew to adulthood, living in their family home, located in Northeast Portland and as a child, he attended his grandfather's (Bishop Robert L. Searcy) church; House Of Prayer For All Nations, singing in their youth choir where he came to know the Lord at an early age.
Douglas attended Highland (King) Elementary and John Jacob Astor Elementary grade school, meeting his life partner for the first time, Lorrayne Ellis. Douglas was a sports fan favoring everything the Giants, San Francisco baseball, and New York football. He participated in little league baseball, took piano lessons, and later developed a strong interest in bongos and drums.
Douglas attended Roosevelt High School where he and Lorrayne became close. He participated in track and graduated with academic honors. Upon graduation Douglas attended Oregon State University, majoring in Chemical Engineering and Business Administration, earning a BA in 1978.
As an adult, Douglas Jr. worked many different jobs some included modeling, JC Penney, and American State Bank. Later, he worked in operations at PSU bookstore until developing a disability in 2005. He enjoyed playing the drums and riding his motorcycle. During his thirties he moved home to care for his aging parents, where he remained several years until their passing. During his senior years, Douglas volunteered at a food Co-op, enjoyed walks with his dog, meeting with childhood and neighbor friends on his afternoon walks.
Douglas was a large man projecting an innocence about him. His niece and nephews would hear his stories and wonder how he lived so long. But he would always say, "The Lord was always there, looking out for me."
