Daryl Winchester Obituary

Our beloved Daryl was born in Emporia, Kansas on May 10, 1953, he passed away peacefully on June 6, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Daryl was the second of five children to the union of Corine and the late Lewis Winchester Sr. His family moved to Portland Oregon when Daryl was two years old.

Daryl met Lupe and they enjoyed 25 years together. From a previous relationship, he was blessed with one child, Jamaal whom he loved dearly, 5 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He and his son were very close and the best of best friends! They talked several times a day and would watch sports together even while in their own homes!

Daryl participated in youth activities as well as singing in the youth choir at Bethel AME Church.  The Winchester family have been members of Bethel AME Church for 65+ years.

While in elementary school, Daryl learned to play the violin. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School, attended Mt Hood Community College and went on to graduate from Oregon State University- Go Beavs! Daryl was proud to be an alumnus of OSU.  While there, he excelled in track and field with a specialty in the triple jump and throughout the years would travel back to attend track meets at OSU.

Daryl loved to help children- really everyone. He always thought of others, totally selfless. After College, he began his career at McClaren School for Boys where he worked for 10 years. To further his work with children he began working for Multnomah County Juvenile Justice Court as a Juvenile Counselor where he retired after 35 years of service.   He decided to work part time at his leisure, but never forgot about the kids in the community. He returned to work part time for the David Douglas school district as a security/basketball coach/life coach to the kids. Everyone loved him, which really showed during his stay at the hospital as several of the kids he coached visited him.

Daryl volunteered on various community projects. He was previously on the board of directors at Open Meadows, and a Mentor with the Omega Boys and Girls Club.

Daryl really enjoyed playing on several softball teams throughout his life and a few of his teammates visited him at the hospital. Coaching was a true passion of his, as he spent over 26 years as a volunteer coach for kids. He took a team that was on a losing streak to winning a championship. He continued coaching until he had to stop for health reasons. His grandson Mychal brought two of Daryl’s former players, now college students, to visit him in the hospital and oh was he happy to see and reminisce with them! He was happy to hear that they were in college and persevered to continue their education.

Daryl loved his cars and his exotic saltwater fish tanks and shared this love with family members by gifting big aquariums. He is also known for frying catfish and his famous oatmeal cookies that he would make for both family and friends.  Daryl always had a love for music: Earth, Wind and Fire, The Gap band, Frankie Beverly and Maze and going way back, James Brown, Isaac Hayes, Isley Brothers to name a few including Jazz! Also in his free time, he really loved playing Backgammon with his friend Ralph and others who stopped by.  There are so many friendships that Daryl cherished!

Another pastime that Daryl loved was to travel. He would get on the road and head to Kansas City, MO or Milwaukee, WI to visit family, taking his mother and grandchildren along and occasionally his sister Mary would travel with them, always returning with a car full of “Mississippi” watermelons that he said were the best!

The Heavenly gates have opened for Daryl to join his father Lewis Winchester Sr, brothers Lewis “Bubba” Jr and Mark. As well as other family members that have gone on before. Daryl leaves to cherish his precious memories, mother Corine Winchester; his wife Lupe, his son Jamaal and daughter-in-law Sokphair; sisters Janise Bradford (Aaron) and Mary Winchester, grandchildren Jazmine (Noah), Jai’ Aja, Jaeda, Mychal and Janessa. Great grandchildren, Ezra and arriving soon, baby Ajla Winchester! He also leaves to cherish great memories: Niece, Kijana Winchester; Nephews, Joshua and Gabriel Bradford; Aunt Norma Kennedy, cousins who grew up as brothers to Daryl, Keith Edwards and Stan Gaines; and a host of cousins here in Portland, Las Vegas, Milwaukee, WI and South Carolina.

Daryl was a strong man with a quick wit, with so many catch phrases that would make us laugh and we will miss him.

Our family would like to say “Thank you” to: The Drs. and Nurses at Kaiser Permanente Hospital and Hospice. The Softball teams, Friends and Co-workers that came to lift him up during his hospital stay and at home.  Thank you and Appreciation to all!

Rest in Peace my son
You were well loved
