Charnetta Hutson Obituary

Charnetta (Char the Star) Rochelle Hutson was born on March 25, 1971 in Portland, Oregon to Gloria Jackson and Michael Hutson. She had a close bond with her mother and cherished their relationship. Although she was an only child, Char grew up in a loving extended family with a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins. Described as a model child, she was respectful and well spoken. She was very driven at a young age, which proved to be an attribute that served her well later in life. Char attended Sabin Elementary School, Beaumont Middle School, and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1989.

While attending Jeff, Char embraced the performing arts. She loved dancing and rapping and modeled her flow after her favorite rapper MC Lyte. She had pure talent and was known for her artistry. As a teenager she performed in local talent shows. Char had big dreams of being famous one day and was determined to make her dreams a reality. She was passionate about her creative projects, and there were many, from being the founder of the performing arts ministry Das Phat (Prophetic, Holy, Anointed, Team), a member of the female rap group DOZ (Daughters of Zion), recording projects as a featured artist, her debut as a film director of the documentary Arts Exit, to her latest project Untie Her.

In addition to her creative pursuits, Char valued education. She wanted to “change the narrative that education is important and it doesn’t matter how you start, it’s how you finish.” She obtained a Bachelor’s degree from Portland State University in 2021, and was thrilled when she was accepted to the Organizational Leadership Program, where she earned a Master’s degree from Arizona State University in 2023.

For more than 20 years, Char was committed to serving others and held several positions working with youth through organizations such as Dreamers, Boys & Girls Club, Portland Community Media, and as a SUN Manager. For many years she worked for Portland Public Schools in various roles and for the past 5 years she was a Restorative Justice Manager. As a bold and fierce leader, Char graciously mentored others.

Char was a woman of God with unwavering faith. Her relationship with God was developed at an early age. She always knew that God had plans for her. As a member of ROCC (Restoration Outreach Christian Church) she served as a leadership trainer and speaker for healing clinics.

As a devoted mother, Char and her eldest son, Elijah, bonded through their love of creativity and enjoyed watching movies together. They had an open relationship and could talk about anything. Char and her youngest son, Sean, enjoyed eating at their favorite restaurant (Mongolian Grill) and working out together in the gym. They would laugh at her jokes which always created a happy vibe. Char was a proud “G-ma” to her granddaughters, Londyn and Madilyn, who were her world. They enjoyed eating Baskin Robbin’s ice cream and watching scary ghost videos. She instilled in all of them the importance of having a good time and living life to the fullest.

In 2023, which Char described as a year of “life surprises,” she met her biological father Mawelulu Onwuku (Roy Bell). She noted, “So, it was DNA that brought us together and we all know DNA don’t lie.” Char was united with her father and his family who welcomed her with love and open arms.

Described as a beautiful soul, Char touched the lives of many who knew and loved her. She will be remembered for her charisma, wisdom, and willingness to support others. Char was preceded in death by her parents, Gloria Jackson and Michael Hutson. She is survived by her father, Mawelulu Onwuku, sons, Elijah Hutson and Sean Minnieweather, granddaughters, Londyn and Madilyn, and a legion of loved ones, community members, and friends.
