Carl Simington Obituary

Carl Edward Simington was born September 15, 1944 in Doddridge, Arkansas to Birl G. and Mamie Lee Simington.  He was the second child of twelve children.  The family moved to Portland, Oregon at the beginning of the Vanport flood in 1948.

Carl attended Elliot Elementary School and Benson High School.  He also studied at Portland State University.  He played the accordion as a youngster and enjoyed sports.  He played basketball, football, and ran track.

He was married to Rosie M. Lester in his early years and was a devoted lifelong father.

Carl started out working for the Rail Road and was a part of the Oregon Air National Guards for six years.  He became Public Administrator for the Government and worked closely with Governor Neil Goldschmidt and Mayor Bud Clark.  Later in life, he became a Licensed CNA and Homecare worker.

Carl enjoyed bowling, fishing and going to the beach.  He was a dedicated family man who loved kids.  He spoke with his children and grandchildren daily and enjoyed spending time with them.  He had a way of making his nieces and nephews feel special.   His favorite phrases were “squirt” or “chump” and “put it in the Divine hands of the All Mighty”.

Carl was a man full of wisdom and insight.  He was kind, generous, and willing to help anyone in need.   He had a wealth of knowledge on most subjects, especially politics and history.  He never met a stranger he couldn’t talk to, and given the opportunity, he would have detailed conversations covering an array of topics.  His children would often joke, “Let’s go rescue that person from Dad” when he was locked into a lengthy conversation.

He was a spiritual man who loved to impart wisdom and advice.  In his final days, he often spoke of the importance of the Lord’s Prayer.

On September 10, 2020, God called Carl home.  He is preceded in death by his grandmother: Sallie E. Simington; parents: Birl G. and Mamie Lee Simington; sisters: Joann, Barbara, and Janice; brothers: Sevedious “Vedi”, Tony, and Lewis “Gene” Simington.

He leaves to honor and cherish his memory sons, Carl L. Simington and Kenneth A. Simington; daughters, Felisa L. Johnson (Dee), Nichole D. Houston, and Charleena L. Jones (Sedell); grandchildren, Richard Jones, Master Simington, Bentley Jones, Shoneece Andersen, and Joseph Jones, a total of (16) great grandchildren; sisters, Rosie Simington-Thompson (Ural) and Betty Simington; brothers, Birl Simington Jr. (Linda), Sylvester Simington and Timothy Simington.  He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
