Calvinita Jo (Lucas) Lewis
Calvinita Jo Lucas was born on May 6, 1961, to Helen Elizabeth (Brown) and Calvin C. Lucas. Calvinita was born in Great Bend, Kansas where she attended Park Elementary School and Roosevelt Junior High. She moved to Kansas City, Kansas where she attended Coronado Junior High and graduated from FL Schlagle High School in 1979. She met and married Kurtis Lewis and they had two children. They moved to Portland, Oregon where she raised her children. Kurtis and Calvinita later divorced but became very good friends.
Calvinita always wanted to become a teacher, even as a child. She began her career in education as a volunteer at Boise Elliot Elementary school. She later became a Head Teacher at Albina Head Start where she taught for many years. Calvinita loved teaching but most of all, she loved the kids she taught. She earned her associates in early childhood development from Portland Community College and later received a BA in Early Childhood Education from Portland State University. She was a Christian and loved worshipping God. She was a member and attended Highland Christian Center in Portland.
Calvinita was the proud Mother of LaShawna Inez and Kurtis E. Lewis Jr. She loved her children and grandchildren very much. Calvinita was preceded in death by her beautiful daughter, LaShawna, Helen Elizabeth (Brown) Lucas (Mother) and Calvin C. Lucas, Sr., (Father), Deborah D. Reece (sister) and Calvin C. Lucas, Jr. (brother). She leaves behind her son Kurtis E. Jr., and grandsons, Kane’n, Keiyohn, Kurtis III, and King Lewis, brothers Michael (Alma) and Carl Lucas, sisters Ann Perry (Mack), Velma Sykes, and Lianna Keith (Leroy), Uncle Chester and Aunt Rowena Brown, Uncle Charles Brown, Uncle Cecil and Aunt Odessa Brown, Aunt Zarah (Lucas) Smith, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Calvinita Jo Lewis received her heavenly wings on July 30, 2023.
