It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Billy Ray Hurst, affectionately known as “The Purple Duck.” Billy passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at the age of 71. A celebration of Billy’s life will be held on Wednesday, July 9th at 3:00 PM at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.

Born in Houston, Texas, and raised in Portland, Oregon, Billy graduated from Jefferson High School, where he played football. He proudly served in the United States Navy. He was a man of great spirit, known for his big personality and deep commitment to his community. Billy passionately volunteered at the local food bank—whether picking up donations or delivering meals, he was always ready to lend a hand.

He loved fishing, enjoyed playing dominoes and cherished the time spent with his friends at Dawson Park. He also loved listening to old Motown music. He was a realist at heart, Billy was known for speaking his truth—raw, honest, and unfiltered. His presence was both grounding and unforgettable.

Billy will be deeply missed by his siblings: Sherron, Andre, Traci, Toni, Terri, and Precious, as well as his nephews Veodis-Deron, DeRay and nieces, Trina, Whitney, Tiffany, Janelle, Jasmin and a host of many more loving nieces and nephews. His loving spirit and genuine nature will forever live on in our hearts.
