George Costello Scroggins was born September 13th, 1957 to Mary and Henry Hawkins Scroggins in Idabel, Oklahoma. He attended Booker T. Washington School, after integration Idabel Gray Junior High school. In 1979, along with his sister, Janice ,George moved to Oakland, California to live with his grandmother. He graduated from McClymonds High School and on to Langston University in Langston, Oklahoma. Being a gifted musician, brass being his specialty, George performed in many ensembles, obtaining many awards throughout his collegiate career. In 1987, George received his Master’s Degree in Education from Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Soon thereafter, he moved to Portland, Oregon. After various jobs, George settled into working for the Internal Revenue Service until retiring early due to health problems.
George passed away on March 20th, 2019 from complications from a stroke.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Brother, Ray Hendrix; Sister, Janice Marie Scroggins; Grandmother, Armelia Watts and Great Aunt, Naomia Daniels.
He is survived by his nieces, Arietta Ward & Nafisaria Mathews; nephews, Francis Scroggins-Ocansey & Ellis Mathews III; great nieces, Godyss Love, Egypt Mathews & Samarhi Mathews and great nephews Jamani Ward-Lewis & Phoenix Smith; Cousins Johnnie Taffee, Melissa Ballard-Batiste and Mel Batiste.
