Delocha James Vaughn was born July 21, 1944 in Florence, Arizona to James Delocha Vaughn and Gladys Mae Frances Hill-Vaughn. He was the second of eight siblings. He relocated to Portland, Oregon at an early age and joined the U.S. Army where he served in the Airborne Unit. He spent his first tour in Okinawa, Japan and served an additional two tours in Viet Nam.
After being honorably discharged he returned to Oregon and held many trades. He worked in the shipyards as a welder and was a skilled wood carver who enjoyed making clocks.
Sammy was the family historian and often shared many stories of the families upbringing. One of his many traits was getting a rise out of his siblings. On the contrary, he was also well known for tickling his nieces. He loved to have fun playing spades and dominoes while sipping on his favorite adult beverage.
He had a special bond with all of his brothers. He shared living quarters with Jim and Andrew who recently proceeded him in death. Also proceeding him in death are his parents and son, Little Sam.
He leaves to mourn his memory, his grandson, his brothers James (Norma Jean) Vaughn of Madera, CA, Willie James Vaughn, James Dunbar; sisters Gloria (Butch) Graham, Nora Vaughn, Nellie (Carl) Hunter all of Portland, OR; Erin Bradley of Detroit, MI, Lois Beasley of Portland, OR and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
