James Kelley Stokes, Sr.
May 25, 1912 - September 18, 2013
James Kelley Stokes, Sr., was born on May 25, 1912, to Pinky (Sanders) and Louis Stokes, in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. He was the youngest of eight children, two boys and six girls. He died peacefully at home with his loving wife of 66 years, Fannie Mae, by his side.

James married Enid Vivian Mitchell, also of Okmulgee in 1930, and from this union came his only child, James K. Stokes, Jr., on March 17, 1940. He entered the Army Air Force in 1942 in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where he rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant, was divorced in 1943, and honorably discharged on January 5, 1946 in Portland, Oregon. In 1947, James married Fannie Mae Greenwood of Tatum, Texas in Vancouver, Washington and recently celebrated their 66th Anniversary on June 18, 2013.

James loved sports, especially Baseball, which he played as a short stop for fifty years from 1924-1974. The last twenty-five of those years were played on the United Air Lines team, where he worked from 1950-1977. James received the coveted honor of "Skycap of the Year" for the United States in 1974, and was celebrated at Awards Banquets in both San Francisco and Chicago. He was also an outstanding bowler and routinely represented United Airlines on the company bowling team. James and Fannie shared a mutual love of the Portland Trailblazers and were season ticket holders from their inception in 1970 until 2004. They also shared a love for the greyhounds, the horses, and the casinos.

James was a long time member of Bethel A.M.E. church and served on the Usher Board for many years. He was also actively involved in the Shriners and achieved the rank of a 33rd degree Mason in Acacia Lodge.

James is survived by his loving wife Fannie, son James, Jr., and daughter-in-law Willa of San Francisco, CA, and granddaughter Kellí Stokes of Los Angeles, CA. He is also survived by many loving relatives of the Greenwood Family; nephew Charles and Esther Jordan, their daughter Trish Anderson and her son Christopher, their son, Dion Jordan and his wife Michelle and their daughters Sidney and Mia. James was a loving father figure for Fannie's niece Merrilee Greenwood-Smith, formerly of Portland, and enjoyed many years of watching both Charles and Merrilee's children grow and mature. There are a host of other family members and friends James enjoyed throughout his 101 years and appreciated all they brought to his long life.
